No real surprise, but sad news.

Saw her at North Sea Jazz in 90s. Loud, foul-mouthed, leering, suggestive, aggressive, passionate ... and she sang some songs too ;-) - she WAS the blues.

First time I heard of Etta James I was about 16 years-old and playing a cassette from my brother's tapes and it's mostly a warbly and hissy mess....until the last part. Jerry is poppin'-off some funky riffs as they slalom through Lovelight and Etta joins the band. WHO is that? Moments later she introduces herself, "My name is Etta James!" and the horns blast and she growls about Tell Mama. "TELL YO mama whatcha neeed, TELL YO MAMA whatcha gotta have...." it was love at first listen.

Of course I knew the song At Last, but had no idea who was the singer on that track(Remember, I was 16). Never occurred to me it could be this gruff blueswoman.

I regret missing her live in concert.

BTW, while not nearly as pristine as the other sources, this version is closer to complete mix-wise.

Saw her at the Playboy Jazz fest one year. She came on right before the headliner of the night. Can't remember who that was but he really should have stayed in his dressing room. She brought the bowl down. Fantastic set that night. Glad I got to see her.

Bummer. Another legend lost. I really do enjoy her performance with the boys at the '82 NYE show.
